Psoriasis and Acne Treatments

Psoriasis is a chronic disease of the immune system which appears on the skin, usually in red, scaly patches. Psoriasis can often lead to other serious conditions such as psoriatic arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. According to the National Institutes of Health, as many as 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis.

Acne is one of the most common medical conditions worldwide, crossing gender lines as well as national borders. More than 90% of all adolescents, nearly 50% of all adult women and 25% of all adults suffer from acne.

Despite many advances in drugs and research, there are no cures for either condition. Canopus has ongoing studies to evaluate the therapeutic application of proprietary camel serum for the topical treatment of psoriasis and acne. These camelid serum/proteins are designed to inhibit the key enzymes involved in generating the skin lesions associated with acne and psoriasis.

GI & Pancreatic Lipase Inhibitors

In a world obsessed with image, it’s not surprising that the sales of weight loss tablets have increased significantly over the last decade. Since 1998 dietary supplement sales are estimated to be growing at a rate of 10-12 per cent annually. It is known that American’s alone spend $30 billion to $50 billion per year trying to lose weight.

Canopus BioPharma is working on a dietary supplement which goes beyond simply reducing calories but as a treatment of obesity. It is a lipase inhibitor which prevents the absorption of lipids and fats which are instead excreted.

Canopus has developed an oral formulation of an extract from defibrillated serum product (not a chemical entity), to be consumed for safe and effective weight loss. It will be supplied as a powder and can be dissolved in water or fruit juice designed to act as a gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor that blocks fat digestion and absorption, leading to reduced energy intake and thus weight loss.

Assay Kit Development

Antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and anabolic accelerator drug contaminants in food are now regulated by all governments. A major difficulty arises from the fact that the detection of these drugs in the food chain has proven difficult using conventional antibodies. The European Union (EU) has called for higher safety measures for monitoring these contaminants in food, however to-date no commercial assay kits, with detection sensitivities similar to that of Canopus are available, to meet this requirement.

Canopus has successfully assembled a number of camel antibody assay kits that can detect these contaminants in food. Canopus’ serum can detect these contaminants at levels within the restricted residue limits designated by the EU.
